Realtors trying to head off tax on home sales

When real estate is sold in Arizona, there is no sales or transfer tax.

But why take the chance?

A group led by the Arizona Association of Realtors is proposing a constitutional amendment that would prevent any level of government in Arizona from imposing such a tax.

The No New Home Tax campaign needs to gather the signatures of 230,047 Arizona voters to put the measure on the Nov. 4 ballot.

"It seems every time people talk about finding another funding source, they talk about double-taxing homes," said Tom Farley, who lobbies for the Realtors.

Homes and real estate already pay property taxes. Farley said the group wants to ensure that another level of taxation is not added.

Last year, Reps. Phil Lopes and Tom Prezelski, both Tucson Democrats, introduced a bill that would have allowed counties to levy a real-estate transfer tax. It never got a hearing.
